Spolrusie was founded by d’bi.young anitafrika to publish works by emerging artists of African descent. The press documents, archives and distributes these works in order to make them available to the wider African diaspora and the world. In 2010, a former iteration of Spolrusie unofficially published its first anthology titled S is for storytelling. The publishing further developed into Spolrusie.

Officially launched in 2013, Spolrusie publishes poetry, plays, photography, fiction and non-fiction, as well as documenting the theatrical work that emerges The Watah Theatre.

The Watah Theatre is a professional theatre company and performing arts school that functioned in Canada from 2008-2018, and is now located in London UK. Also founded by d’bi.young anitafrika, Watah specialises in producing political theatre and is home to BLAk sOLo International fEsTiVal of Monodrama & Poetry.

Watah was founded on the frameworks and groundations, laid by Jamaican-Canadian and Caribbean-Canadian theatre practitioners and Dub Poets such as Amah Harris of Theatre in the Rough; ahdri zhina mandiela of b current theatre; Djanet Sears of the AfriCanadian Playwrights’ Festival; Lillian Allen; Rhoma Spencer of Theatre Archipelago; the mother of Jamaican poetry Louise “Miss Lou” Bennett; and from the Jamaica School of Drama, stalwarts such as Honor Ford Smith, Eugene Williams, Dennis Scott, Mikey Smith and Anita Stewart (d’bi.young’s mother).

Hundreds of Canadian artists were trained at Watah during its tenure in Canada. Watah, with its recent move to London UK, is focused on supporting a new generation of emerging Black Canadian and Black British artists and on publishing their work through Spolrusie.

The press operates from Tkaronto Kanata, London UK and Puerto Viejo Costa Rica and is focused on supporting a new generation of Black artists.

New Program Announcement

Ubuntu! Decolonial Arts Centre, in collaboration with Spolrusie Press, is offering a unique opportunity for writer-performers, dub poets, spoken word artists, and storytellers to publish their creative works. This 3.5-month online publication residency, led by d’bi.young anitafrika, will immerse participants in the Anitafrika Method, providing comprehensive mentorship, editing, and design services. The program, running from March 3 to May 2, includes professional cover design, ISBN registration, and 10 free printed copies of the final work. Alumni of d’bi.young anitafrika's previous courses receive a discounted rate for this transformative journey towards becoming a published author in 2024.
